Is this free?

Unlike Rigs of Rods, no. It'll set you back $15. :(
If you haven't heard of it, RoR is free and great. Just need mods to have a good ol' time (arguable better than in BeamNG).

It's been a month, and they say they are hard at work. From what I've read..
There will be races and the option to choose your car's colours .
Also stability fixes.
Races will be like RoR's, so enjoy a race I did with a Tatra... hot off the presses.

So what is this game called and is it all about the awesome crash physics?

BeamNG and yes. It seems developers have become complacent, though. Here's my two cents: if you want good crash physics for free, get Rigs of Rods (made by the same people). Its mods are great in number and it is good quality. It's really easy to mod, too.
